Understanding the Basics of Speed

Speed is a card game designed for 2 players, based on quick thinking and rapid play. The objective is simple – be the first to get rid of all your cards. It requires a standard 52-card deck and a flat surface to play on. Beforehand, it’s essential to agree on hand signals or sounds to indicate when a round starts and when it ends, ensuring clear communication throughout the game.

Setting Up the Game

To begin, divide the deck evenly between both players, each receiving 26 cards. Each player then forms a draw pile with their cards. You will set up the layout for the game as follows:

  • Place four piles in the center of the play area, two active piles, and two side piles.
  • Each player sets up a separate pile next to them, which will be their hand, holding five cards from their draw pile.

How to Play Speed

At the start signal, both players simultaneously turn over the top card from the two center active piles. Players quickly play cards from their hand to the active piles, following these rules:

  • Cards can be placed on either active pile, in ascending or descending order, regardless of suit.
  • Players can only use one hand to play or draw cards.
  • If neither player can play, both say “speed,” and flip a card from the side piles onto the active piles to continue.
  • The first player to empty their hand takes any remaining cards from their draw pile into their hand.
  • The game continues until one player has played all their cards.

Strategies to Win at Speed

Winning at Speed requires more than quick hands; it demands strategy. Here are some tips to help you outsmart your opponent:

  • Stay Organized: Arrange your hand in a way that makes it easy to see sequences.
  • Be Observant: Keep an eye on your opponent’s hand to anticipate their possible moves.
  • Use Both Active Piles: Don’t focus on just one pile; playing on both piles increases your chances to discard cards.
  • Practice: Like any game of speed and skill, practice makes perfect. Improve your reaction times by playing regularly.

Final Thoughts

Speed is more than just a game; it’s a battle of wits, speed, and strategy wrapped into an entertaining and challenging package. Whether you’re looking for a fast-paced game to play on family game night or something to test your reflexes, Speed has got you covered. Grab a deck, find an opponent, and get ready to shout “Speed!” at the top of your lungs. Let the games begin!
