Understanding the Basics of President

The President card game, also known as “Scum,” “Asshole,” or “Kings,” is a classic social card game, beloved for its ability to balance strategy with social hierarchy. Played with a standard 52-card deck, the objective is simple: be the first to play all of your cards to become the President in the next round. But beware, failure to do so may result in you becoming the Scum.

The Setup

  • Players: 4-7 (ideal)
  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck
  • The initial dealer is chosen at random.
  • Cards are dealt clockwise until all are distributed.

Gameplay Overview

Starting with the player to the left of the dealer and moving clockwise, each player takes turns playing cards. The goal is to beat the previous card played with a higher-ranking card or combination of cards. Gameplay involves strategy in selecting which cards to play to ultimately outrank others while depleting your hand.

Rules and Rank of Cards

In President, the card rank ascends from three up to the ace, with twos being the highest possible cards capable of beating any other card or combination. Special attention should be paid to the various combinations that can be played, as outlined below:

Combination Description
Single One card, ranked by its face value.
Pair Two cards of the same rank.
Triples Three cards of the same rank.
Straight of at least five cards Cards in sequential order, regardless of suit.

Winning and Titles

The round ends when a player has successfully played all of their cards. Players are then ranked based on the order they finished, from President to Scum. Each title comes with specific advantages or disadvantages in the next round, influencing the strategic depth of the game.

  • President: The first player to discard all cards. Receives the best cards from the Scum in the next round.
  • Vice-President: The second player to finish. Exchanges one card with the Vice-Scum.
  • Neutral: Players who finish but do not hold special titles.
  • Vice-Scum: The second-last player. Must give a card to the Vice-President.
  • Scum: The last player with cards. Gives their highest cards to the President.

Key Strategies

Successful President players balance the immediate goal of shedding cards with the strategic manipulation of their hand to maintain control. Knowing when to play your highest cards, conserving pairs or triples for the right moment, and understanding the flow of power within the game are all pivotal to climbing the social ladder within President. Adaptability, observation, and a bit of cunning will serve you well in this game of hierarchy.

Dive into the President card game with this guide, and you’ll not only enjoy hours of fun but also sharpen your strategic thinking and social maneuvering. Whether you’re aiming to be the President or simply escape being the Scum, every round offers fresh challenges and opportunities. Gather your friends, shuffle the deck, and see where the cards fall!
